“Sleep Paralysist!” Try to say that a bunch of times fast. Based on his previous output and the title of this song, you’d think that Alan Palomo bka Neon Indian was about to drop another warped, humid single on us. But maybe dude figured he’d clean things up a bit because this wasn’t actually coming out on cassette, or maybe the new, clearer sound came as a result of working with Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor for this song on Green Label Sound. Whatever the case, this is somewhat uncharted territory for Palomo. The drugginess of his original work is gone, instead replaced with crystal clear space age funk.

hate being that totally annoying music nerd bro who sets the record straight, but you know b4 neon he was putting out really clean sounding electro pop under the name VEGA that sounded basically just like this, so its not really “uncharted territory.” maybe NI was just a way to cash in on the momentary popularity of the chillwave vibe before going back to a more VEGA-like sound.
I feel you on that to an extent, but having seen VEGA live, I feel like it’s actually a different enough sound. VEGA felt more balls-to-the-wall, while this is basically just a cleaned up Neon Indian track with some more low end.
Crikey, i remember when he was in Ghosthustler! I loved that project.
ghosthustler was worlds better than neon indian.
This is probably one of my favorite songs of 2010, along with Odessa by Caribou; Internet Killed the Video Star by The Limousines and Floating Vibes by Surfer Blood.
