Thorough Internet research tells us that Gastown is on the northeast end of downtown Vancouver, just along the waterfront. It was named after the unfortunately named "Gassy" Jack Deighton, a steamboat captain and barkeep who opened the city's first saloon after he arrived in the mid-19th century. Hundreds of saloons and bars followed, and a century later, the area was one you'd avoid unless you were looking for trouble. It's been revived recently, cleaned up and made a national landmark. Japandroids, Vancouver lifers, are compiling two out-of-print EPs and releasing them as No Singles on May 11th via Polyvinyl. "Darkness On The Edge of Gastown" is the Springsteen-nodding first mp3 and a bruiser you may have heard them play live. They tend to kick things off with it so I figured it made sense to start Friday the same way. GOOD DECISIONS.
