Dreams of Sponsoring an R&B Chick: The 5 Ladies of adidas

The shortage of ladies in R&B is kind of a nightmare we need to wake up from. Compared to Biggie's hit list of females he rapped about smashing, the most talented ones that are still kicking are all dried up, yet we're still checking for them. There's something terribly wrong if today's talent pool is so shallow that no one's getting wet, ya dig?!

So if it ain't Beyoncé or Rihanna, who else is there (under 40)? The list goes on from Keyshia Cole, Amerie, Chrisette Michele, Melanie Fiona, and even Joss Stone if you want to get hippie with it. Forget shopping around for girl groups, they aren't built to last. So when adidas teamed Ciara and Adrienne Bailon for their new Originals spring/summer campaign, we learned that popular R&B chicks are still getting looks beyond music, and reality shows (sorry Brandy). In fact, adidas has been loyal to women even B.I.G. would dream of. Keep reading to see the other four tops.

CASSIE FOR MISSY ELLIOT'S RESPECT ME

Before Cassie put music and movies into her triple threat repertoire, it was her modeling that got her started. One of her most commercial campaigns was appearing in Missy's Respect ME ads. Even if singing isn't her strong point, style is where she gets people to pay attention. Cute, racially ambiguous girls, wearing loose fitting clothes, Cassie made it cool; the asymmetrical baldy, not so much.

ESTELLE FOR ADIDAS' 60TH ANNIVERSARY

Happy belated birthday adidas! Better late than never, right? Last year when adidas celebrated 60 years outfitting sport, and lifestyle they threw a huge house party which turned it into a commercial that we would have dropped everything to be in. Estelle was joined by Young Jeezy, Missy Elliot, and Kevin Garnett as guests of honor. David Beckham also made a cameo, upping the European quota to two. Goes to show, folks in the UK can rock more than Nike Air Maxes after all.

MISSY ELLIOT FOR RESPECT ME

Thanks to Run DMC putting adidas in rap's style lexicon Jam Master Jay, Reverend Run, and DMC have become synonymous with the brand. That was long before rappers had clothing lines, and of course failed clothing lines. For over six years, Missy Elliot has run a successful signature adidas brand over six years ago, spawning tracksuits, and sneakers. Even though she wasn't of the typical model size, there was still a place for her tomboy-ish style, just as long as the designs didn't involve garbage bags.

ADRIENNE BAILON FOR ADIDAS ORIGINALS

Apparently, Adrienne has an album in the works on Def Jam. What that will sound like, who will be on it is any one's guess now that she's the last lady standing from 3LW. All eyes were always on her to make it big. Even Rob Kardashian Jr. was up on her early when he wifed up the mami from the Cheetah Girls. Don't let her mouse ears fool you though. Now that she's sporting the three stripes, it was her landing strip that also made her famous.
