Craig Finn Plays The Nicest, Tipsiest Preacher Ever In The New Hold Steady Song

We suppose it's fitting that an album entitled Heaven Is Whenever would have it's preachy moments. Luckily this is Craig Finn we're talking about here. So preachy comes in relative, nostalgic terms and he seems to incriminate himself as much as anyone else. In the case of "Barely Breathing", the preaching refers to how the scene has changed from his day (as is par for the Hold Steady course, reasons are a bit vague, but we gather something about the kids being less hardcore and more into Twitter). But he doesn't really seem to blame you or I any more than himself or the whole machine. Needless to say, Craig Finn probably wouldn't make for the most aggressive politician, but his earnestness and lack of condescension make him a pretty worthwhile scene orator. Also, this ranks right up there with "The Weekenders" as our favorite preview to the album yet. Stream it over at Stereogum.
