Each week, FADER Media Style Director Chioma Nnadi will comment on the throwback style and fashion of a Suite903 artist. Today’s Re-Issue: Boy George.
Back in the summer of '06, Boy George was photographed by practically every tabloid news outlet on the face of this Earth sweeping the streets of Chinatown. Those 5 days of humiliation were his punishment for being busted with cocaine, and as a rugrat of the '80s, it was really a sad day for me to see the aging pop star so broken down like that. For all the weird culture references—the kabukiesque makeup, rasta hair extensions—there was something so weirdly magical about him, maybe because his beauty regiment (strong eye liner and powder pink blusher) would end up being my own.
"Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" is one of my favorite Culture Club jams, and as usual Boy George does a great job of treading the line between awful and amazing. There are a few sartorial gems to look out for here. First off, the mirrored round sunnies in the opening scene are killer, and then there's the all white ensemble that BG wears in the pool—when he emerges from the water you notice that his shirt is scrawled with Arabic script. There's also a great moment when Boy George is rescued from his jail cell by two women in head-to-toe West African garb. If only all culture vultures could look like this!
