Video: Liars, "The Overacheivers"

This video works on two levels: first as the depressing internal narrative of a wealthy, healthy but emotionally destitute man, and second, as Liars' 1980s, punk-style protest of mediocrity. (To be fair, elliptical trainers are terrifically mundane. We know, we use them often.) But yeah, we've seen all of that before—American Psycho, Fight Club, blah blah blah. The best part of this clip is that Liars appear to be advocating some kind of weird ritual—the oil, the eggs, the silk bag dripping with guts—to combat turning into Patrick Bateman. It looks like a combination between the fake Santeria depiction in all corny movies, and a graduate thesis in the art program at Cooper Union. Hey, if we have to light a few candles, say some witch chants and dance around a chalk circle to avoid full-blown suburban meltdown, we'll do what we have to do. Watch it over on their website.
