SURVIVE’s Love Triangle Mix

May 10, 2010

Okay seriously, what is going on in Texas? We've always known the state to be proud of its musical heritage and we're pretty sure you can buy SXSW memorabilia all year round. But when, exactly, did this much good music start coming out of the area? We have to give the Austin-based label/collective Light Lodge quite a bit of credit, releasing a diverse array of music from bands like Pure Ecstasy and analog electronics wizards SURVIVE among others. Put together by Tommy Boy this primer for Vice UK of music that's coming out of the Austin-Houston-Dallas area. There are a lot of great moments, including the first couple minutes of a track by George Quartz that reimagines Harry Nilsson's "Coconut" as a gothy workout, sounding closer to tense underground fight music than the relaxed vacation vibes of the original. You're bound to find at least a couple things you're into somewhere on here.
