Premiere: J Roddy Walston and The Business, "Brave Man's Death"

JRoddy2

We have a feeling that most of the ding dongs wandering around the internet right now will be quick to reference The Hold Steady the first time they hear J Roddy Walston and the Business. Maybe they’ll throw out words like “bar band” or “whiskey” as well. It could get crazy. While J Roddy and his Baltimore-based Business clearly sound as though they’ve filled an ashtray/shot glass or nine, “Brave Man’s Death” boasts a brawn that we haven’t heard in a rock band since Catfish Haven came and went. Listen to the way they roll their sleeves up at the three-minute mark and then drop the hammer thirty seconds later. To hear Walston say he doesn’t want to die is to believe him— you’d have to be a real ding dong not to.

When I first heard this song all I could visualize is J Roddy playing a flaming piano surrounded by burning metal and gasoline…possibly from a plane crash. This song and many tracks off of the their first release smells like kerosene and I love that. It makes me want to go buy a knife, drink a six pack of whiskey and get in a fight.

I’m with Devon on this one. I look forward to screaming the lyrics of this song in a disruptive manner with a bottle in each hand the next time these guys come to town.

Every time I try to download the mp3 it just saves a 6kb mp3 file that obviously doesn’t play. I would love to be able to figure this out.
