Over the weekend, The National played a show at the Brooklyn Academy of Music —an old venue appropriate for a band whose most recent album, High Violet, plumbs the depths of adult romance under murky lighting with a ginger touch and poignant eye. Yo, being old enough to see the inevitable end of your relationship is MUY DEPRESSANDO, don’t remind us dudes! The performance was tight and excellent of course, but amid all those softly moaned new songs, they managed to slip in our favorite track, “Mr. November,” from 2005′s Alligator. From its opening chords to singer Matt Berninger’s sardonic, fire-spitting treatise (I’m the new blue blood), they went OFF. Berninger must have felt a little of his own juice, because he was inspired to jump into the crowd, climb up on some chairs and sing his face off. Someone’s parent at 3:48 is super psyched. So were we.
