Stylee Fridays: Natalie Wood of Something Else

June 04, 2010

As a cosmically inclined designer, Natalie Wood is most certainly a lady after our own hearts. We first spoke to the Aussie designer back in the summer of 2007 about the psychedelic prints she creates for surf label Insight. Wood was recently in town to showcase her own line, Something Else which she's been expanding for the past few seasons. The holiday 2010 collection was inspired by the early 20th century Swiss artist, Emma Kunz. Kunz was a recognized healer, and started channeling her telepathic powers at the age of 18, but considered herself a researcher above and beyond anything else. She is best known for the intricate geometric drawings that she composed with a divining pendulum.

Much like Kunz, Wood's work is anchored in art, and it's those pieces that form the basis of her custom prints. With contributions from several artists, including NY's Deanne Cheuk, the patterns in the new collection draw from Kunz's spiritual symbology—there are healing triangles and cosmic eyes rendered in vivid watercolor. The label has been around for about four years, but is relatively new to the States, and although Woods will be making more trips to the NY in the coming months, she has no plans to move here any time soon. Like many Australian designers, she enjoys the peace that comes from living by the ocean (Bronte beach to be exact). After all, space and time to think are probably the most healing things on Earth.
