"It sounds like something I wish I had written." This is what James Mercer says of Squeeze's "Goodbye Girl" and seems as good a reason as we have ever heard to cover a song. Part of Levi’s Pioneer Sessions, Mercer’s contribution is one of many great songs dug up from pop’s foundations for the project. The rhythm and chorus are a playful but faithful homage that show Mercer's adoration for Squeeze while that trademark voice can't help but bring you back to that old band of his.
