Video: Woodsman, “Balance”

June 14, 2010

Here is the scene we just invented: Slint accidentally invented a rock sub-genre that involved long songs with dramatic quiet-loud dynamics, a whole bunch of bands took that idea and ran with it to create 35 minute songs with track names that have to do all the explaining since there are no lyrics. Somewhere in there it all got tied to sports, and then we couldn't watch anyone set foot on a field or court without imagining Explosions in the Sky playing dramatic drum rolls while a guy tried his best to win even though. Woodsman do follow some of those dramatic ideas in that their songs can approach around 18 minutes like it isn't even a thing, but they're stonier, more lax, willing to have fun with it. They seem more about the jam than the emotional journey it took to make that jam. All that being said, this video sort of features some basketball being played, and it doesn't make us want to root for the underdog or cry. Breaking the mold!
