Two very long names—let's break them down. David Karsten Daniels is a San Francisco songwriter in the American tradition of somewhat sensitive, ethereal sounding men. Fight the Big Bull is a Richmond, Virginia big band conglomeration led by Matt White with the help of many folks playing post-jazz brass jams. Together they form the compound David Karsten Daniels and Fight the Big Bull (no compromises!), which is in effect a gluing together of both of their styles of Americana, a trumped up folk with a lot of horn joy. Their joint album, out Tuesday the 22nd on Fat Cat, is called I Mean to Live Here Still and all of its lyrics are from the writing of Henry David Thoreau. "Smoke" is quick number from that album, peppery and with an almost Latin feel with quick drums and muted trumpet. The video, with burnt grass and young love, has got a vibe scorched by the sun, bustling ants and white flowers, which is exactly what the song sounds like, a productive spring.
