Jazmine Sullivan, "Holding You Down (Goin' In Circles)" MP3

jazmine-sullivan-circles

The route to being a queen of hip-hop/soul is pretty simple—good beats. Mary J. Blige may wear the crown, but if it weren't for her court of producers like King Combs Puff Daddy, Chucky Thompson, and Trackmasters, she'd just be another singer from Yonkers. To be fair, Jazmine Sullivan was just a kid when Mary was around to witness the history made by the sampled artists used on "Holding You Down," Jazmine's new single produced by Lamb and Missy Elliot. These days, being on the adult contemporary tip for MJB has made your favorite rapper's around the way girl less relevant, leaving the door open to fresher talent like Jazmine to lay new claim to the archives she left untouched. A changing of the guard? Maybe. Listen to "Holding You Down" after the jump, then see the source of Jazmine's inspiration.

JACKING FOR BEATS: JAZMINE SULLIVAN'S RAP BLUEPRINT OF SAMPLES

SLICK RICK AND DOUG E. FRESH, "LA DI DA DI"

If the circles on the artwork for Jazmine's new song were supposed to be a Venn Diagram, "La Di Da Di" is somewhere in the middle with all the other adjoining circles crossing paths with this widely-sampled classic. Oh, and this B-side to Slick Rick and Doug E. Fresh's "The Show" still gets performed to this day! The cycle continues.

MARY J. BLIGE F. KEITH MURRAY, "BE HAPPY" (REMIX)

"Be Happy" is nicely interpolated with the lyrics switched from Mary's version: How can I love somebody else/If I can't love myself enough to know/when it's time, time to let go to Jazmine's version, I can't lie, found somebody else/when I know, know that you're doing wrong/it's so hard, hard to let go. No shots at the throne.

AUDIO TWO, "TOP BILLIN'"

It's not a true summer if Audio Two's "Top Billin'" isn't sampled by someone who will have a record on radio. It's been about three years since 50 Cent breathed new life into the Brooklyn legend, it's about time Milk is chillin', again.

NAS F. AZ, NATURE, FOXY BROWN, "AFFIRMATIVE ACTION"

While we're on the subject of queens, how about them Mets?! Nah, actually the borough gets the money because the Trackmasters-produced "Affirmative Action" from Nas' sophomore album is blended with the original track provided by Missy and company. Smells like Escobar season.

DJ KOOL, "LET ME CLEAR MY THROAT"

"Let Me Clear My Throat" is by far one of the most over-played records of all time (OF ALL TIME!), specifically at Sweet 16's and wedding receptions from here to Dubai. But that's the kind of staying power the Washington, DC DJ had in the '90s, and now he's back in the club with Jazmine.

DJ KOOL, "20 MINUTE WORKOUT"

See, DJ Kool never gets old.

BIZ MARKIE, "MAKE THE MUSIC WITH YOUR MOUTH BIZ"

That snappy sequence of snares at the beginning of "Holding You Down" are courtesy of the Biz. Over the years he's been kind to J Records' roster from Mario's use of "Just A Friend" and now Jazmine for her nod to "Make the Music with Your Mouth Biz." A cameo of him doing the Biz dance in the video would be a nice way to cap it off.
