As Nas explains on the beginning of his take on “Hey Young World,” he copped the idea for “The World is Yours” from this track, both paying homage to Slick Rick and reintroducing an empowering idea to a different generation. So of course it made sense that, when approached by Levi’s Pioneer Sessions to cover anything he wanted to, this was the one he chose. The song is downloadable for free over here, but we happened to get our hands on a limited edition, super-rare test pressing of the track on 7-inch vinyl to give away. To enter, leave your name in the comments and tell us why your love for Slick Rick will never die. Be sure to include your real address so we can contact you if you’ve won. Good luck!

Slick Rick is truly one of a kind. An artist that speaks in a voice & style that are his alone. The Ruler!!!
He’s one of the best musical storytellers that ever was. Like Townes Van Zandt great. “Behind Bars” and “The Moment I Feared” are as good as it gets.
Beneath the Gold & the Eye patch are some of the great stories ever crafted recorded and told. He took being different from London, and a being blind in his right eye and turned it into part of his brand. Through his stint in the pen and being deported time and time again. He remained light hearted always with a smile on his face. Rappers for centuries pay homage to him with bigger, brighter and heavier chains. But you know, like I know their will only be one Ruler.
Because I wear an eyepatch all day.
Why Slick Rick? Because:
La di da di, we like to party.
We don’t cause trouble, we don’t bother nobody.
THE RULER.
He had style, scandals, and was the ultimate storyteller.

because anybody with that much gold around his neck and an eye patch who isn’t a pirate has to be a hip hop legend. And because everyone in the world has heard La Di Da Di, if they know it or not.
Slick “the storyteller” Rick is truly significant artist name with emblematic charisma! My love for what he do comes from the fact that he is real into it, because he doesn’t try to show himself into a light that is unreal for his personal life, because he is one of the very few names from the past who still do music that cost and put the dance floor on heat!
Because, before M.I.A., Slick Rick made it cool to be a rapper with a British accent.
Slick Rick had a unique voice and style that had never been heard before. He made it easy to visualize everything that he said with his rhymes. He has the most recognizable voice in hip hop and is versatile enough to handle a variety of beats. His influence is undeniable in hip hop. I can’t wait for him to make a new album.
Slick Rick is one of the legends of hip hop his style is still being looked at today 2010 thats how ahead of his time he was and still is… fashion and story teller icon for hip hop lovers
i wasnt old enough when he was rockin but im influenced by his style and being unique i wanna rule the world too you know
I always say “there’s no day without a slick rick’s song”
rick is a pimp to the core. marinate on that.
because he’s a legend.
Because Slick Rick taught me how to treat a woman.
I found out about slick rick through numerous covers, and samples, from numerous other artists which I love (mos def, nas, even snoop)…
When I finally heard the original it made me realize why I like the other artists – because they were heavily influenced by him.
because ricky d could take any phrase and make it dope and it’s not cool to dress bummy, act like a dum dummy, and disrespect your mummy
First concert I ever drove to was headlined by Slick Rick. I always loved how his videos always had NOTHING to do with what the song was about!
Because he’s BLACK and BRITISH and JAMAICAN (now I under stand why the Fader loves him) and borrowed lyrics from the Beatles and melodies from Oriental pop music to make truly original, narrative rap music. The ruler.
Alright Party People in the house! Maybe I didn’t know the complete lyrics to the national athem in sixth grade, but knew every word of “Lodi Dodi”, my daily code of conduct was guided by it.

Hands down one of the most fluent story tellers in all of hip hop. Slick Rick has been a staple of the community since he laid down the rhymes on the classic Doug E. Fresh track “The Show” under the name M.C. Ricky D. Many purists put him at the top of their top 5 M.C. lists alongside greats like Rakim, KRS-One, Nas, Tupac, and Eric Sermon. Slick Rick influenced hip hop with his off the wall fashion sense as well. Artists like Flavor Flav, ODB, Scarface and Kool Moe Dee, owe as much credit to Slick’s gold chained, eye patch wearing pimped-out style, as much they do to his delivery style. Slick Rick was and still continues to be one of the greatest MC’s of all time, and to overlook this fact is a great disservice to his legacy.

Why? Because dude made ‘Adults Only.’ That track can make the most grizzled veteran of sexual exploits shudder, on both sides of the gender line. Rick the Ruler’s presence on any song ups the entertainment value in spades. The Outkast collabos, the prison raps, and the fact that even if he got deported he’d still own America.
A few of many reasons…
Slick Rick = G.O.A.T. storyteller. Enough said.
Slick Rick is a legend of the scene and has been since he started his journey in the wonderful world of hip hop. Hearing the story and seeing the documentaries of him on the corner battling with his main man Dougie Fresh droppin the fresh beats from the natural MPC. Slick Rick has been a inspriation into my life with his style, street sense, and all around talent. Much Love goes to the man.

ever since i heard “children’s story” as a kid, slick rick was my favorite storyteller. Nas is overall my favorite emcee, so this 7 inch i really want.
Slick Rick’s particular voice and style has not lost one step – as can be heard in Mos Def’s most recent album, on the song Audition. His mastery of smooth-toned rhyming with his still seemingly effortless story telling proves that he is still one of the best MC’s at really making the listener empathetic to his character and, of course, the story that he is telling, shattering any doubt that he is the Ruler. His lyrical aim is dead on, even with his lack in visual depth perception.
