When a genuine musical shift happens, for even a season or a year, any artist associated with that phenomenon can be easily pinned and hung up on a line, never to be revisited by those who were, so to speak, tardy for the party. If the Nite Jewel you know had a latent yearning towards disco--some have said, "bedroom disco," which makes no sense, because you can't just add "bedroom" to a word to signify low-budget production, that's just nonsense--you were right. The title track from her new EP Am I Real? sticks with her pop-disco aesthetic, but far more slimly on the disco side than we've heard in the past, focused predominantely on assimilating the joyous, sexier parts of 90's pop runoff. And the song's wormhole effect shouldn't be underestimated. "Am I Real?" diagnoses our very real and desperate need for come-hither vocals, memorably simple lyrics, a fresh something that sounds old without sounding too throwback. Nite Jewel's Am I Real? EP is available now on Stones Throw, and, what's more, they're offering the title track for zero dollars and no cents. [via GvB]
