Too Many Daves: Dave Tompkins’ Vocoder Radio Show, Mixed by Chairman Mao

August 19, 2010

No one knows more about the vocoder than Dave Tompkins, not even the dude who invented it. Dave Tompkins spent ten years writing an awesome book about the vocoder and its cultural impact (How to Wreck a Nice Beach, read it immediately), owns formerly classified CIA documents regarding the vocoder, and spent a lot of time waxing rhapsodic about the vocoder with Rammellzee (RIP), among other fascinating tidbits. So if you are a DJ, and Dave Tompkins literally hands you some records to mix into a definitive vocoder compilation and play on your radio show, you do it. And if you have a vintage vinyl radio show and named your child after one of the Ultramagnetic MCs like Chairman Mao did, you probably should just pack it in and make Dave Tompkins your BFF por vida, never to leave his side. Instructions for non-DJs and commoners: after downloading this show, proceed to Dave Tompkins' site, where he has written a detailed, endlessly joyful liner note-style tracklist to accompany Too Many Daves, which as far as we're concerned should be retitled Not Enough Dave Tompkinses. Tally ho!
