John Baldessari is 79 Years Old and About 79 Times More Awesome Than Everyone Else Alive (Except The Rent Is Too Damn High Dude)

It's not too often that the New Yorker and Supreme cross paths in the same week, but that's what happened when the high-minded weekly and the downtown culture kings both championed Los Angeles art legend John Baldessari recently. In the October 18 edition of the magazine Calvin Tompkins profiles the artist in advance of the major retrospective of his work opening at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art on October 20th, calling Baldessari "the most relevant artist of the moment." While a show at the Met, rather than MoMA or the Whitney, doesn't exactly support that statement in most people's minds, there's nothing like a run of Supreme decks to show and prove his place in the current culture. Ironically (or not?), it will be a lot easier for the young and moneyless to check for Baldessari at the dusty old museum on the Upper East Side than score one of the three super-limited decks by the downtown dons.
