Video: No Age Played on Letterman, Sans Paul Shaffer

No Age played the Late Show with David Letterman on Friday. Dean looked like a Marine on leave and he and Randall sounded awesome. But, for whatever reason, their performance made us realize for the first time that Paul Shaffer and the band no longer jam out with the guests like they used to. Showing our age, we remember watching Late Night with David Letterman in like 1991 and, as you can see below, not only was Paul sort of conducting “The Wagon” from behind his keyboard, but the bass player who looked like Edgar Winter/Janice from the Muppet Show played bass and they let the spikey-haired dude do the guitar solo! How times have changed. Still pretty awesome to see No Age get Dave all riled up, though.

I was at the Letterman Show that night No Age played, got to see them rehearse and the CBS Orchestra was really digging No Age’s rehearsal. It was loud, especially in an empty theater and all of Shaffer’s band were bobbing their heads and obviously digging the sound; staying on set to watch them rehearse. When it was done, their lady guitarist, Felicia exclaimed, “That’s what i’m talking about!” and Paul went up to Dean to talk about his gear and how they operate. One of the other guys, maybe the bass player Sid was talking to Randy for a long time too about his gear and pedals. I remember him saying, “I was going to ask if you guys needed a bass player but, man you guy’s DON’T need a bass player!”. Even funnier was during the first rehearsal, Dean’s drum stick flew out of his hand and either hit or nearly hit one of the Late Show band members, to which he faked being upset and threw it back at Dean.

Maybe Paul doesn’t rock out with the bands anymore, but they all seemed to really like and respect what No Age does and got some time with them before the show started.
