Hatchback, “Hotaru” (Edit) MP3

March 23, 2011

For his second solo venture, Sam Grawe aka Hatchback (and the other half of the electronic group Windsurf) returns to the things he loves most: new age, dreamy, instrumental music. After a Windsurf tour in Japan, Grawe was reading The Old Captial by Yasunari Kawabata and was inspired by a passage about hotarugaike, or firefly lake. And, really, the song does evoke that dreamy incandescence of fireflies (you can even here a snippet of nature sounds—and frogs!—at the end of the unedited track). According to Grawe "I just kept the title in Japanese as an homage to my buds in 9dw, particularly the keyboardist synth dude whose dream it was to have a pet tree frog." Not sure if that dream has become a reality, but "Hotaru" on repeat is definitely a stellar compromise. Hatchback's new LP Zeus & Apollo is out on Lo March 28th.
