Thrintage: Old Hollywood

April 20, 2011

FADER contributors cross boroughs, counties and states to find fine thrifted and vintage pieces on the cheap for our column, Thrintage. This week, intern Nick Spain hit up Greenpoint to check out Old Hollywood.

Greenpoint is known for a lot of things: Polish food, Peter Pan Donuts, and about 3,000 cheap clothing stores that line Manhattan Avenue. Tucked in amidst all of that, though, is this little gem of a store. Old Hollywood is one of those "vintage/re-imagined vintage/some new clothes" hybrids that seem to be popping up everywhere in Brooklyn. What I really love about this spot is that it's one of the few places that can actually cash in on their claim of having completely unique clothing, which unfortunately makes the price a wee bit higher than your average vintage shop. I was more than a little disheartened to find the men's section completely gone from the back of the store (there will be more, the salesperson promised me), but their dresses, shoes and accessories make this an ideal place for a ladies spring/summer shopping spree.

What I loved about these two dresses was how unapologetically loud their prints were. Go big or go home.

I was partial to the simplicity of these checkered linen dresses mainly because I'm from the Southwest, and I realize the importance of materials that breathe during the summer. Plus, I just saw Michelle Williams in Meek's Cutoff, so I'm into that whole down-home prairie feel at the moment.

These two mod dresses look like they're straight off of The Brady Bunch set, but pair them with some crazy colored shoes and they become one of my ultimate dressed-to-death looks for women. Ladies, now you too can get freaky with your beau backstage just like Maureen McCormack.

This look reminded me of something my grandmother would've worn to church back in Nacodoches, Texas. It possesses a quirky sensibility that can only come from living alone and pickling okra for 20 years.
