Premiere: Christian AIDS, “Young Luv” MP3

May 04, 2011

Christian AIDS conjures the controversy surrounding David Wojnarowcicz' "A Fire In My Belly," the 1980s video piece by the now-deceased artist that had Speaker of the House John Boehner up in arms late last year, threatening to dry up all funding to all art everywhere. With his piece shown and then removed at the National Portrait Gallery, Wojnarowcicz, who died of AIDS at 37 in 1992, riled the conservative community with a small scene in "Belly," showing ants crawling up and down a small crucifix. The piece itself, now more than 20 years old, became a lightning rod for right wing anger at supposed amorality. It's a disappointing, disturbing fight and one that will continue probably forever. It's also one, by naming themselves Christian AIDS, that Christian AIDS clearly has a stake in. "Young Luv," the B-side from their upcoming "Stay +" 7-inch, sounds like the soundtrack to controversy, dark bass and deep echoes. Watch the entire "A Fire in My Belly" on Vimeo. Sounds good with the volume on Christian AIDS up.
