Early this year, The-Dream promised a new album, The Love IV, would arrive in June. It’s May now, but I haven’t heard a single. Why is The-Dream trying to play me?
The hype started with a cheeky coda on the “Sex Intelligent Remix,” about dropping that Love Affair on 6/7/2011. Those were his words! So I thought I’d have at least one more season of synth romance. Then everything fell apart. He got divorced, said he was retiring and pulled the rug right out from under me. But then he changed his mind again. In February he announced he was working on the new album, to be called The Love IV. I found myself suspicious. Does anybody remember the Love Sessions mixtape he was supposed to drop with DJ Drama? No? Precisely. He released one cover of Aaliyah‘s “One In A Million”, a tracklist and cover art. He had the streets going ham and never followed up. Not saying The-Dream is not a man of his word but we all know albums can be as elusive as morals backstage at a rap show. However, it seems moves are being made for this album.
In March, Diplo said he was in the studio working with Terius in Vegas. Might The-Dream be switching up his sound a bit? An album full of features would be full of mind-melting promise. After three albums, fourteen songs in his own style with just him might be a bit stale. He should have a lot of collaborators to chose from—how may people owe The-Dream a favor? DO YOU KNOW WHO HE’S WRITTEN JAMS FOR? But where’s the physical evidence of new music? I know Dream’s not just laying around. I’ve seen his new speaker line. His website still says “The Love IV Coming Soon.” But there are no recording-session pictures, just rumors that he and ex-wife Christina Milian may be getting back together.
So I say this: Do not play me Terius. Don’t you do something crazy like move the album back to the fall, when my windows will be rolled up. I don’t want to play old jazz while I’m trying to seduce tenderonis this summer. Please! I want some “ooh ooh ella ella” to go with my tan legs and a weave down to my cheeks. June 7, 2011? You’ve started a verbal contract and I want to hold you to it.
While I’ve been in waiting, Four Color Zack DJ’d an awesome set full of The-Dream classics. If you’re as tired as I am of putting all your Terius tracks on shuffle and hoping for the best, check out the mix of well-blended love music.
