What We’re Reading: Best Coast

September 23, 2011

Given the popularity of our week-long What We're Reading series, we've decided to make it a weekly column. Just think of this as your non-committal book club with The FADER and some of your favorite bands. For this installment, Bethany Cosentino of Best Coast gives us her top picks.

Storms: My Life with Lindsey Buckingham and Fleetwood Mac by Carol Ann Harris: Carol Ann Harris was Lindsey Buckingham's girlfriend right after he dated Stevie Nicks, and this book is all about her crazy stories of dating Buckingham and going on tour with the band during their most dysfunctional years of touring. According to this book, there was a guy who toured with Fleetwood Mac whose soul purpose was to collect beer caps off the floor and fill them with cocaine for the band. So much information packed into this book; crazy love triangles, crazy tour stories, so much craziness.

Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly by Anthony Bourdain: I'm a huge sucker for television, as most people know--but my favorite thing to watch is food-related TV shows. I love Anthony Bourdain because he's such an asshole. He just says whatever he wants to say, and it's awesome. This is one of his earlier books, so it's got a lot of really cool stories about him as a teenager growing up in New Jersey, and he talks a lot about what it was like to be a chef before he was known for being the guy who called Paula Deen "the worst, most dangerous person to America."

Everyone Loves You When You're Dead: Journeys into Fame and Madness by Neil Strauss: I bought this book in an airport on my way to Chicago. It's a collection of interviews that Neil Strauss has done over the years. There are some really epic things in this book. Like when he interviews Snoop Dogg and takes him to buy diapers, or when he makes Lady Gaga cry, or when he tries to interview Julian Casablancas but he's too drunk to talk. This book is mostly made up of parts of interviews that celebrities probably never wanted you to see, which makes it so much more fun to read.
