It's weird to remember teenage life as anything but a time where everything is uncertain and even the good stuff holds the kind of emotional weight that should be stored and saved up for more important times like having a kid or dealing with economic collapse or something. But those days were great in their own way, too. They marked a supreme, unselfconscious obsession with yourself and your feelings and what that all means. It makes for a lot of embarrassing memories, but it also makes for some great ones. As an adult, you'll probably never feel as huge or as small as you did when you were a teenager. Unless you're Anthony Gonzalez, who has spent his entire career as M83, reaching backwards for those big teenage moments through his music. He's gotten as close as you can possibly get plenty of times, but his newest record, Hurry Up, We're Dreaming is probably the most accurate approximation of those heady days of youth. It's super long, beautiful at times, plodding (although necessarily so) at others. Essentially it's a massive, flawed album about being young and dumb, and it's a daunting enough listen that it can act as your own personal Neverland until you get sick of it and decide you feel like growing up a little bit.
