Nada Surf, “When I Was Young” MP3

October 25, 2011

Nada Surf’s "When I Was Young" comes from their upcoming early-2012 full-length The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy, and it's so delightfully earnest. Since Nada Surf has released music fairly consistently after "Popular" hit MTV 15 years ago, it's not exactly fair to figure "When I Was Young" entirely as an ode to getting the band back together, rediscovering what drew them to making music in the first place. But it's fun to read the track that way. It's amazing how much time love saves you at first/ when you rediscover your reason to work, now-40 lead singer Matthew Caws opens. It's maybe the opposite of deriding quarterbacks and popular high schoolers. He just sounds really well adjusted. When I was young/ I didn't know if I was better off asleep or up/ Now I've grown up/ I wonder, what was that world I was dreaming of? Feeling fulfilled must be amazing.
