When “Vest On” was first released on Waka Flocka’s Salute Me or Shoot Me 3, it was called “My Momma Told Me.” It was one of his best songs ever. The name change is morbid and disappointing, shifting our focus from tribute track to gun violence. It was kind of tender the way he sourced paranoia to his upbringing. Not wanting to get shot is a given, but taking to heart your mother’s advice isn’t. Last week Naomi and I were trying to figure out the song’s first phrase—was it Momma talked to me or My lord talked to me? We decided on the latter, but even the possibility of confusing those two figures makes an interesting statement. Hardly seems like the point anymore. Please don’t get shot, though, pleaaaase don’t.
