I’m Not Not There: It’s Once Again Cool to be on Your Own Album Cover

November 03, 2011

Seems like a million years ago that dudes would spray on a pair of jeans, blow out their hair and then pose for a bunch of wild glamour shots for the covers of their own albums. It was an ego thing. Or maybe it was about getting girls. Or getting guys. Whatever the underlying reasons, it boiled down to making yourself look as cool as you sounded on record. At some point, though, it became corny, and album art turned toward the abstract. In the past couple years, however, we’ve noticed a shift back to covers that actually feature the artists responsible for making the music. Proving that all you need to feel like a rockstar is a cool picture of yourself on the cover of your own album looking like one. Here’s a selection of releases from recent times that are bringing hubris back to rock.
