Sess 4-5 and Keedy Black, “I Luv Dat Boy” MP3

December 02, 2011

The cosmos aligned nicely this week, and after roughly 30 weeks atop my personal pop charts, Kelly Rowland’s "Motivation" was knocked from its perch as Inarguable Best Overall Jam 2011, only to be replaced by two locally-famous and nationally-unknown rappers from New Orleans, Sess 4-5 and Keedy Black. I regularly check out DJ 5150’s mixtapes, especially his required-listening N.O. to the B.R. (New Orleans to Baton Rouge) series, which highlights the breadth of Louisiana's buzzing bounce tracks, real-talk rap and everything in between. "I Luv Dat Boy" appears on 5150's most recent tape in the series, N.O. to the B.R. 8.

Sess 4-5 is a fixture in New Orleans. A few years back, hip hop writer Davey D gave him an "Unsung Heroes" award for his efforts in the wake of Katrina and fighting the destruction of public housing. Keedy Black is a rising artist who released a video for her track "Hammer" earlier this year. But "I Luv Dat Boy," the duo's collaboration with producer BlaqnMild, really stands apart. Keedy quotes Debarge, channeling the overpowering infatuation of "I Like It," but stripping it of all decorum, ultimately creating an all-too-rare graphic love song. It's an explosive, euphoric celebration.
