Keep Shelly in Athens’ latest, “Struggle With Yourself,” is like riding the cart down into the coal mine and finding the canary not dead yet, but brooding its last breaths over a four-track. Sarah P’s vocals shine through, as always, but more like a flash light in an emergency than, say, a happy star. The bass is all creeping black sludge and the beat is ominously militaristic, of the 2011 fascistic, gas-masked police force variety. The more I play it back, the more I can imagine terrifying scenarios suited for the track. “Struggle With Yourself” features on the band’s Campus Martius EP, out now on blue vinyl via Planet Mu.

WOW!!! I love the mood this track puts you in….it’s beautifully dark. Her voice really grabs you & I agree with you, the production really forces you to paint vivid terrifying scenarios, but in a good way. Awesome. Thanks for sharing this Duncan!
