Every week a different FADER staff member will pick a clothing item or accessory that he or she has lately been spending a lot of time with—or would like to—and write a little love letter to it. We would’ve done a column on who we’re dating but that seemed a little bit much. This week Deidre Dyer talks about her Sperry Top-Sider Princeton Boots.

Trends can be tough to navigate. If you follow style blogs, work in fashion or know someone that knows someone that is a stylist, you can find yourself overly aware of them, which, more often than not, can lead to acute trend fatigue (currently an incurable condition). These days, with the internet, you usually hear about the next major fashion moment before it even happens.

Don't be freaked, though: trends can be great if you know how to work them. They can be harbors in the storm, helping you chop up the intimidating fashion world into concise and easily digestible bites. Figure out what works best for you and how to incorporate it into your own look. Sperry’s Princeton Boot is my way of tackling the leopard print trend that is currently pouncing all over runways and sidewalks. Even though Oprah suggests that I should sit this trend out, I like a little garishness from time to time, even if it is the pattern of choice for the Kardashian sisters. Crazy neon sneakers, overly-exaggerated eyewear and leather kilts aren't for me, but these shoes are loud enough. I'll know I've overdone it if I end up looking like any of these dudes.
