Stream: Thieves Like Us, “Marie Marie”

January 11, 2012

Since their aughts-standout "Drugs in my Body," Thieves Like Us have cultivated a weirdly tense form of cokey disinterest, always clearly laid out by their cover art: girls falling down stairs, for example, or now, for Bleed Bleed Bleed, their fourth LP and first on Captured Tracks, girls lying on broken mirrors. Everything feels like a warning and nothing seems that pleasant. "Marie Marie" is the first song off the new record, a track made super-human by the way TLU sing its title with varying degrees of detachment, sometimes practically slurred together into three exasperated syllables. There's a tambourine, but it's supposed to be this terribly dark, right? Bleed Bleed Bleed—if they're calling it that, I guess the answer's yes—comes out March 20th.
