One of the cool things about recent FADER cover artists Black Hippy is how they all seem to fit snugly on a continuum of thoughtful gangsterism. On one end, you’ve got the goofy Yoda-isms of Ab-Soul, then the more measured yin and yang of Kendrick Lamar and Schoolboy Q, and on the other end you’ve got Jay Rock, the basso profundo of the group. Listen as he dips into more contemplative Ab-Soul-esque territory on the relatively sedate “Checkmate.”
