Live: Amadou and Mariam

April 09, 2012

Amadou and Mariam are a duo from Mali who met at an institute for the blind when they were young and now wear awesome, matching silver glasses. Or sometimes they are gold. Though they started as a more traditional blues group, they've begun incorporating more contemporary sounds and have recorded songs with TV on the Radio, Santigold and Theophilus London. You can hear said songs on their new album, the first since 2009, called Folila that comes out tomorrow on Nonesuch Records. We met up with them at The Standard Hotel in Cooper Square to hear super stripped-down versions of a couple songs, which recall their early days. Watch them do "Oh Amadou" above and "Wily Kataso" below.
