Stream: Mount Eerie, “Lone Bell”

April 24, 2012

For the last few years, Phil Elverum, as Mount Eerie, has slowly been perfecting his production technique, adding black metal to his already formidable roster of hollowed-out, existential nature folk. It was a surprising move, but it also made sense. Elverum has always been obsessed with the scary beauty of the natural world, and incorporating a droney, warm version of black metal into his sound, has allowed him to explore that idea even further. There are moments of that on his excellent new album Clear Moon, but there are also tracks that are reminiscent of his older material. "Lone Bell" is one of those, incorporating saxophone and a hiccuped drum roll into a hypnotic loop. It's music that sounds like it was made For the Earth, By the Earth (FEBE?). Clear Moon is out May 22nd.
