Dad You Be Killin Em: Adesina Dawodu

June 14, 2012

We have so much to thank our fathers for. In addition to teaching us how to ride bikes and be good sports, they’ve also been our sagely guides through life. As a small token of our affection, we’re counting down to Father's Day (this Sunday, heads up!) by celebrating our dads’ style, wit and wisdom.

What did your dad like to wear? My dad's wardrobe consisted of tailored suits, silk button downs, penny loafers and traditional Nigerian embroidered-brocade agbadas.

What music did he listen to? My parents were serious partiers, they'd go out every weekend. They kicked it at The Shrine, Fela's legendary nightclub, alot in the late 70s. There was always music in our house. My dad used to wake us up on Saturday mornings by blasting Fela Kuti, Ebenezer Obey and Roy Ayers. "Smooth Operator" by Sade was one of his favorite songs. After waking us up, we'd drive to the Ikoyi Club in Lagos pumping Fela with the air conditioner turned all the way up to freezing!

What would he say? Does he have a fave phrase or saying? Something anecdote-y. "Well, I don't know about that."
