Ever wonder what a song inspired by a painting inspired by drinking would sound like? Turns out, much better than you might guess. For their Artist2Artist series, Vice rounded up Toronto-based dream pop duo Southern Shores to write a song based on a painting of a woman by Jody Hargreaves, which itself was inspired by a handle of Bombay Sapphire gin. The result of this convoluted ekphrastic process is “Malabar,” a gauzy, coastal fusion of fragile synths, steel drums and hymnal chanting—aka the perfect song for a lazy beach day. If only unfettered creativity and good decisions were always the end results of drinking.
