Stream: Mac DeMarco, “My Kind of Woman”

July 26, 2012

I've written plenty of times about sincerity in music. How it's often not there, or if it is, it's overdone to the point of awkwardness. Previously, I felt that Mac DeMarco was actually too insincere, but on "My Kind of Woman," and actually much of his upcoming 2 (out Oct 16th on Captured Tracks), DeMarco sounds semi-defeated—creating a range of sometimes bubbly, but mostly drifting pop songs about love and life. It's not all bummers, and his tongue is still leaning firmly toward his cheek, but there's a sort of weariness that can't be ignored. It's not a very tangible thing, which makes it difficult to pull off, but DeMarco does it extremely well.
