Video: Tame Impala, “Elephant”

September 19, 2012

There's a moment in Tame Impala’s "Elephant" where the bassline does something not dissimilar to what Roger Waters’ does in Pink Floyd's "Money." It's too subtle to be taken for a nod, but Tame Impala, as a band, is expert at distorting those well-worn tropes just enough to make them feel fresh. For the video, Yoshi Sodeoka gives "Elephant" his visual equivalent of taking acid while watching The Wizard of Oz, splicing together heavy rainbow solarization and kaleidoscope effects (all analogue of course) with The Silentlights’ live footage of the band and what looks to be some sort of occultish séance. Tame Impala's Lonerism is out October 9th in the US, and the "Elephant" single (with excellently fitting remixes from Todd Rundgren and Canyons) is out now on iTunes.
