Brooklyn trio Widowspeak has always kind of sounded like a very self-conscious cross between Fleetwood Mac and Mazzy Star, but their recent trip into the studio with producer Kevin McMahon, the man behind the ultra-lush production on albums like Real Estate's Days and Swans' The Seer, should remove all doubt to the contrary. "Ballad of the Golden Hour," the lead single on their upcoming Almanac LP, sees singer Molly Hamilton sounding at once breathier and more deliberate than she did the last go-round, as the pummeling rhythms and sighing slide-guitar arrangements provide additional layers of depth.
