Stream: William Basinski, “Dlp 1.1” (Live at The 54th Venice Biennale)

November 16, 2012

This past September, we asked composer William Basinski to take us back to the happy accident that, ten years prior, gave way to the Disintegration Loops, an unlikely ambient opus involving the sound of analog tape loops decomposing in real time. Marking the 11 year anniversary of the piece's inception, which coincided with the September 11th attacks in New York, Temporary Residence Limited recently reissued the full Disintegration Loops along with recordings of two orchestral arrangements by Antony & The Johnsons member Maxim Moston, who had the herculean task of manifesting the sound of mechanical failure via live instrumentation. Below, hear his take on "Dlp. 1.1," as it was performed at the 54th Venice Biennale in 2008.
