Stream: The Men, “Electric”

January 09, 2013

There is a beautiful passage on The Men’s new single "Electric"—an ascending, five-note bridge that steps slightly out of meter and out of the original key as it links two sections of melodically predictable, almost self-consciously straightforward rock & roll. It's the kind of twist that the Brooklyn four-piece have made their signature over their past three albums, even if the song marks a more immediately digestible, even overtly rockist direction for The Men, who recorded New Moon up in the Catskills last year. The production notes, which point to the presence of piano, mandolin, harmonica, and lapsteel, suggests that band might be having their first real Exile moment, although I guess we'll see on March 5th, when they album comes out on Sacred Bones.
