Preview Emily Kai Bock’s New York Rap Documentary

January 16, 2013

Emily Kai Bock, the Montreal-based director behind Grimes' "Oblivion" video and one of FADER's 12 to Watch in 2013, profiled Mykki Blanco, Angel Haze and Pro Era member C.J. Fly in a documentary about New York rap, premiering this week online and at the Sundance Film Festival. The film's a part of New American Noise, a six-part series about music scenes across America, funded by Nokia, set to air on the Sundance Channel. What's above is just a short taste of Kai Bock's episode, via Nowness, but it's really a pleasure to watch. Bock's pans are patient and dreamy, seen from the perspective of the quietly wide-eyed friend at the side of the huddle, and their warmth suits the rappers' mushy voiceovers about the renewed vitality of rap's underground. For more on Bock's subjects, read FADER's Angel Haze feature and watch FADER TV's starring Blanco and C.J. Fly, below.
