Video: TOKiMONSTA f. Kool Keith, “The Force”

February 06, 2013

Last month, when LA's TOKiMONSTA—whose connection to EDM has probably been overstated by people eager to point out a female producer in the genre—posted her collaboration with Kool Keith on Facebook, she wrote: "SO MY SONG W KOOL KEITH IS OUT ON YOUTUBE & THESE EDM-only PPL HATE THE SONG. IT'S FUCKING HIP HOP PEOPLE!" More accurately, "The Force" falls somewhere in between those scenes, and is better off for it. The video opens with a fantastic whirlwind of tribal drums and the song's name splayed on the screen in a zigzagging Rugrats font. One of the strangest MCs to ever open their mouth lends a typically spacey verse, though his vocals sound most exciting in the last 30 seconds, when TOKi chops and flips them on their head, making him sound as alien as ever. Her new album Half Shadows comes out in April, via Ultra.
