Video: Macklemore on Basquiat

May 03, 2013

On May 15th, Christies will auction Dustheads, a 1982 painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat, the artist name-dropped by Jay-Z, Kanye West, Pharrell, Rick Ross, Danny Brown and Mackelmore, the latter of whom raps I love Basquiat, I watched Keith Haring/ You see I studied art/ The greats weren't great because at birth they could paint/ The greats were great cause they paint a lot on "10,000 Hours." Watch Macklemore perform that song and talk about Basquiat's legacy above. Two more videos made in conjunction with the Christies presentation—Basquiat collaborator Al Diaz talking about the painter's rise and friend Toxic disussing Basquiat's personal life—are below. Dustheads, also partially seen below, is expected to sell for $25-35 million, possibly breaking the record $26.4 million his painting Untitled 1981 went for last November.
