Stream: Dennis Callaci & Simon Joyner, “The Frayed End of the Rope”

May 06, 2013

Dennis Callaci runs Shrimper, a label that pre-dated and inspired other forward-thinking, deeply personal labels like Woodsist. Simon Joyner, from Omaha, Nebraska, is audibly an influence on the Bright Eyes-helmed Saddle Creek scene of that area. You can hear this in their collaboration, "The Frayed End of the Rope," a five-minute folk epic packed with drunken strings, tangled guitar twang and the sort of heartbreaking narrative that lends timeless weight to even the newest songs. "The Frayed End of the Rope" is from a joint LP, New Secrets, that they have coming out on May 11th via Shrimper. To come full circle, it was recorded by Jarvis Taveniere of Woods, with contributions from Kevin Morby from that band and Babies.
