We got a first taste of Deafheaven's very monumental relationship to sound with "Dream House," the thundering, 9-minute opener of the black metal-inspired San Francisco unit's new Sunbather LP. The title track is a similarly multi-tiered epic, traveling through a melodically unpredictable succession of tremolo-filled, tension-building moments and blast-beat-driven explosions. It's a bit darker in affect than its predecessor, but somehow each gut-splitting howl from singer George Lesage Clarke sounds both despairing and euphoric, as though this unchained outpouring of pain were necessarily also an assertion of life.
