Video: Marie Davidson, “Esthétique Privée”

June 14, 2013

Montreal artist Marie Davidson's "Esthétique Privée" clanks and wheezes. Her voice floats, almost lullaby-like, over a rickety drum machine pulse and ghostly keys. The fallback descriptor here would be Lynchian, which is maybe obvious, but definitely works. In the video, Davidson wanders through "scenic" Bushwick, Brooklyn with a vacant stare, the camera cutting to moments of pained singing intermittently. It's not in-your-face unsettling so much as squirm-in-your-chair-for-no-explainable-reason unsettling. Davidson's self-titled EP is out June 18th on Holodeck.
