JoJo Sues Her Label, Blackground Records

In 2004, at age 13, JoJo made waves with her Number One single "Leave (Get Out)." Now 22, she hasn't released a studio album in seven years. Recent mixtapes like Can't Take That Away From Me (2010) and Agápē (2012), as well as her viral cover of Drake's "Marvin's Room," show a singer ready to tackle more mature subjects—so what's the hold up? According to a Buzzfeed report, she's offered up several versions of a third album to her label, Blackground, but received no response.

Now, JoJo is fighting back with a lawsuit, citing a New York State law that forbids minors to sign contracts spanning longer than seven years. From this perspective, JoJo's contract would have expired in March, 2011, leaving her free to find a new home for sultry tracks like "Demonstrate" and pop smash "Disaster." If those songs are the kind of material she can make without a well-managed label's support, we have a lot to look forward to. Below, check out a FADER TV interview filmed this January.
