Stream: Big Sean f. Kendrick Lamar and Jay Electronica, “Control (HOF)”

August 13, 2013

There's a new Kendrick Lamar verse; Hot 97 DJ and loudmouth rap fan Peter Rosenberg is "hearing the entire game has been shut down." He's not off base—Kendrick boasts the energy of 10 dudes and crowns himself the rap king of both coasts on "Control (HOF)," a seven-minute track produced by No I.D. that was recorded for Big Sean's upcoming LP Hall of Fame, out August 27th via Def Jam, but won't appear because its samples could not be cleared. What is competition? I'm tryna raise the bar high./ Who's tryna jump and get it? Kendrick asks, floating in a league of his own after checking the competition:

I'm usually homeboys with the same niggas I'm rhyming with
But this is hip-hop and them niggas should know what time it is
And that goes for Jermaine Cole, Big K.R.I.T., Wale, Pusha-T, Meek Mill, A$AP Rocky, Drake, Big Sean, Jay Electron, Tyler, Mac Miller
I got love for you all but I'm trying to murder you niggas.

Big Sean was wise to deliver his verse before Kendrick's got started—third in line, rare bird Jay Electronica sounds relatively deflated. For more on why "each TDE release is like a clinic on how to produce rap music," read Andrew Noz' Kendrick Lamar FADER cover story from last year.
